We walk among racists

We breed racists in this country. Seriously, we do. How can we not when we have mainstream newspaper like Utusan Malaysia? When we have so-called NGOs like Perkasa? And so on, and so forth.

The most damaging of them all must be where they walk along the corridors of learning, our schools are undeniably crawling with them.

One fine example is illustrated by this gem of a remark:-

“Chinese students are not needed here and can return to China or Foon Yew schools. For the Indian students, the prayer string tied around their neck and wrist makes them look like dogs because only dogs are tied like that,” Siti Inshah was quoted as saying in at least one police report. (See Tony Pua's take at http://bit.ly/dhZ4Zk )

It either makes you cringe or your blood boil.

Kee Thuan Chye wrote about it here in his article "What will they do about racism now" at http://bit.ly/bxOFFW :-

"If she did what she is said to have done, she should instead be drawn and quartered, like in the good old days. Or have her head put in a cangue – you know, like in the Chinese movies, where the head and hands are locked up within a square wooden contraption.

Or she should be given the Japanese treatment – force-fed water while someone jumps on her bloated tummy, or hung from a tree by her thumbs, and displayed publicly for all to see that this is what happens to racists.

Of course, I’m being facetious, but this must surely be the fantasy of anyone who feels disgusted by any racist act. All the more so if it is committed by someone who is a principal of a school, who should be spreading the message of racial unity instead of – God forbid! – racial hatred."

Tongue-in-cheek I know, but conveying no less the emotion so many of us felt over this issue.

And finally, Mariam Mokhtar puts in her perspective of this shameful behaviour in "A noble profession is disgraced" at http://bit.ly/b0frMB :-

"Her remarks are unacceptable and a disgrace to her profession – the teaching profession.

She should have done the right thing and tendered her resignation. But only after making a public apology and after writing a letter of apology to each of the students in the school.

So what is a letter to each of the 2,200 students? She has done much harm to young, vulnerable and impressionable minds. At the same time, a noble profession has been besmirched, and a nation’s fragile truce between the races, is threatened.

If she will not go willingly, then she ought to be sacked. I have worked in companies where racism is not tolerated and the punishment is instant dismissal.

The head teacher’s insensitive, racist and daft comments uttered at the school assembly, is an insult to the Merdeka day celebrations.

Does this woman know the significance of Merdeka? Is she too young to have studied history at school or too young to know about the struggle to achieve Merdeka? Is she a perfect example of our much maligned BTN system?"

Where do we go from here? Can I accuse the Barisan Nasional government of propagating racism in schools?

From the looks of it, it is so easy to do an inception of this idea into young impressionable minds. Start 'em young, indoctrinate them and take it all the way into universities.

Then it won't take much to convince them that they are indeed under 'siege' when it comes to election time. Percentage wise, they got it all well covered because the minorities are soundly outnumbered.

It's sad. It's depressing. It makes me wonder what it is left in this country that is worth investing my love and affection for.

Protesters threaten bloodshed over Hindu temple

By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal SHAH ALAM, Aug 28 — A group of Malay-Muslim protesters claiming to be residents of Section 23 have threatened bloodshed unless the state government stopped the construction of a Hindu Temple. Amid chants of "Allahuakbar," the group also left the severed head of a cow at the entrance of the State Secretariat here as a warning to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim. The "residents" said that the construction of a Hindu temple in a 90 per cent Malay- Muslim neighbourhood was insensitive because activities there would disrupt their lives.

They claimed that the "noise" from the temple would disturb their own praying, and that they would not be able to function properly as Muslims. The group of 50 over protestors marched shortly after Friday prayers from the Shah Alam State mosque to the State Secretariat. “I challenge YB Khalid, YB Rodziah and Xavier Jeyakumar to go on with the temple construction. I guarantee bloodshed and racial tension will happen if this goes on, and the state will be held responsible,” shouted Ibrahim Haji Sabri amid strong chants of “Allahu Akbar!” Ibrahim identified himself as the Deputy Chairman of the Resident’s Committee against the building of the temple in S23 here, which is perceived by some as being a Muslim majority area. He told the press that the state should move the temple to Section 22 as ‘originally planned’, and also labelled Khalid a “traitor to the Malay race and Islam”. It is understood that the protest is an immediate reaction towards the Selangor MB’s visit to the Hindu temple site yesterday, an act seen by the "residents" as disrespectful to the Muslims of the community. Mohd. Zurit Bin Ramli, who claims to be the secretary of the "Coalition of Malaysian NGOs" echoed Ibrahim’s stand on the matter, saying that it was irresponsible on the part of the state government to approve the construction as there was apparently a “90 per cent” majority Muslim population in Section 23. “With a temple on our residential area, we cannot function properly as Muslims. The temple will disrupt our daily activities like prayers in the Surau. We cannot concentrate with the sounds coming from the temple,” stated Zurit. When asked whether members of the protest were affiliated with any organisations or movements, Ibrahim claimed that the people present today were members of PAS, PKR as well as Umno who are “united in the name of Islam and the Malay spirit.” The state government was also accused of lying to the people of Selangor. The Chairman of the Residents Committee, Mahyuddin Manaf excitedly proclaimed that the committee would uncover “the lies” and find proof of the state’s misconduct. “Khalid Ibrahim wears a mask of a Muslim, but in truth he is a liberal. PAS stands to lose out as a result. I voted for PAS as well as Khalid in the past elections,” Mahyuddin claimed. The issue first cropped up when the Selangor government proposed that the Sri Mariamman temple be relocated from Section 19 to Section 23. CHERAS UMNO STARTS FUND FOR UTUSAN

KUALA LUMPUR: The Cheras Umno division has started a fund to help Utusan Malaysia defend itself against a RM30mil defamation lawsuit filed by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.

Kicking off the fund with a RM20,000 contribution, division head Datuk Syed Ali Al Habshee said the Tabung Azan would also be used to assist mosques and suraus that needed money to buy loudspeakers for the purpose of the azan (call to prayer).

“Teresa has challenged the honour of Malays by suing Utusan Malaysia as it is a newspaper owned by the Malays.

“Challenging the Malays is similar to challenging Umno,” he said in urging other divisions to contribute to the fund.

On Thursday, Kok sued Utusan Melayu Sdn Bhd and the paper’s columnist Zaini Hassan over an article that allegedly defamed her.

Kok was said to have petitioned a mosque in Puchong to reduce the volume for the azan, something which she has strongly denied.

The mosque has also stated she was not involved in such a move.

Syed Ali said questioning the azan meant questioning the honour of Malays and Islam.

Bollywood idol Shah Rukh Khan is a Datuk. The heartthrob will be receiving his Datukship from the Malacca Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob in conjunction with his birthday tomorrow. Listed as an artiste from Dreamz Unlimited in the list of recipients, Shah Rukh will be receiving the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM).

He is among 77 recipients of the title.

Shah Rukh, 43, is a highly acclaimed Indian actor who works in Bollywood films, as well as film producer and television host.

He has starred in several box-office movies and won awards throughout his career.

Sin Chew journalist arrested

Sin Chew Daily journalist Tan Hoon Cheng has been arrested today under the Internal Security Act at 8.30pm at her home in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

She is the second person to be arrested today under the tough security law which allows for detention without trial. It is learnt that she has been taken by the police to the Penang police headquarters.

Tan had reported that local Umno chieftain Ahmad Ismail had allegedly said that Chinese Malaysians are “squatters” in the country. Her report sparked a nationwide outcry, resulting in Ahmad being suspended by Umno for three years after an emergency meeting on Wednesday.

Sin Chew had three days ago came out strongly to defend Tan, who was accused by Ahmad for misreporting his comments. It is unclear whether Ahmad, who remained defiant despite being slapped with the suspension, has also been detained.

This blogger will be taking a short break and would like to thank all who continue to drop by.

Wake up to the anger, Dollah!

The election may be over, but the anger is still bubbling.

Everywhere I go, I hear people scolding and scolding the government of Abdullah Badawi, the MCA, the MIC and even the almost dead & buried Gerakan.

At the petrol station, I hear people muttering curses at Dollah over the high petrol prices they have to pay now.

At the makan stalls, you can hear how the people have come to view MCA and Gerakan leaders as a huge embarrassment to the Chinese community.

While waiting for the kids to come through the school gates, the topic of conversation invariably includes a favourite question, "What the h*** is Pak Lah doing?"

The people are worried about bread and butter issues. Not exactly about whether Anwar will or will not allow the police to take a sample of his DNA.

The brouhaha over Anwar is mostly a joke. But they get angry when they start to discuss how the country seems to grind to a halt with so much government focus being given to derail this one ambitious man.

And disgusted when talking about the joker in Terengganu who admitted that Proton cars are really lousy and if you can have Mercedes Benz paid for by taxpayers, why not?

And the perennial favourite, ketuanan this and ketuanan that, what was that for? If so geng, how come nobody wants to employ your university graduates? Ketuanan is just another word for big bully, isn't it?

My ears are burning and the collective anger has dampened my mood.

Malaysia's annual inflation rate jumped to a 26-year high of 7.7 percent in June due to a substantial rise in fuel prices, according to official data released today. Nor Mohamed Yakcop, second finance minister, had already said that a 41-percent hike in subsidised fuel prices last month was set to boost inflation in June and July. The figure came as something of a surprise as economists had predicted June inflation of 6.6 percent. - AFP

Hishamuddin and his patriotism

I thought he was lame and pathetic when I read his so-called apology, published in the local media on Saturday, April 26.

Was there an iota of sincerity in his carefully worded speech?

Now, see how he justified his apology to the Malays as published in a local newspaper today.

Ketua Pergerakan Pemuda UMNO, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein berkata, keputusan beliau memohon maaf secara terbuka ... bertujuan menyedarkan orang Melayu ... berjuang demi bangsa mereka.

Katanya, ... keutamaan baginya adalah kepentingan parti, bangsa dan agama, selain menyedarkan orang Melayu untuk bersatu dan bangkit semula dalam mempertahankan hak sendiri.

Lagi-lagi parti (UMNO), bangsa (MELAYU) dan AGAMA (Islam).

Tak bosan ke?

I believe I'm a more patriotic Malaysian than someone who only wants to uphold the interests of a particular political party, a particular race and a particular religion in this country.

So sad, isn't it? Seems like the results of GE12 just make them go from bad to worse.

Do you have a yellow shirt?

BERSIH's attempt to stage a rally from Dataran Merdeka to the Istana Negara today will surely be full of drama, as promised by our Prime Minister.

Wouldn't it be simpler to get the message across if the organisers go to the ground and dedicate a certain day for ALL concerned Malaysians throughout the country to don a yellow shirt plus any other yellow accessories in support of their cause?

I mean, how is the police going to arrest every single yellow attired person scattered across the whole of Malaysia?

There's a letter in the mail for our dear Prime Minister from his beloved Hindu community here.

And our police force also wants to send a message to the Hindus here.

Finally, Miss Lulu has some high hopes for the coming election (which I believe many believe to be next month) which will take place after the Festival of Lights.

Certainly, I hope this early Deepavali message delivered by the Barisan administrators will shed much LIGHT unto all of us so that even the blind can feel the vibes.
