Save Bukit Gasing?

You might easily miss this piece of news published in The New Sunday Times today (Nation, p28).

The inconspicuous 4cm x 9cm item was culled from Bernama:-

>Federal Territory
"Some green lungs must go"

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Territories Minister Datuk Zulhasnan Rafique said some green areas in the city would have to be sacrificed to meet housing and educational needs. Development had to be carried out in the Bukit Gasing area because it was located in an urban area.

"We also have to build low and medium-low cost houses, schools and community centres. We only gazetted 54 percent of the hill as a green area," he said yesterday.

The Government, he added, was striving to create more green areas in Bukit Kiara and Putrajaya.

Is this an ominous warning or what?

First it was Bukit Cerakah, coming up next is Bukit Gasing. Looks like our Bukits are prime commodities just waiting for the next person to lay his itchy hands on.

And as recent as on the 26th April, the NST had reported in this article that the Klang Valley hills will remain green.

Now, which is which, dear Minister?

Just because Bukit Gasing is situated in an urban area therefore it must go?

I guess I should write to Bloomberg New York's mayor to kill the Central Park and start developing it into housing estate.

Or Hyde Park in London into some apartment block.

The love of money is the root of all evil!

Hey, welcome back to the blogosphere cc!

You are spot on in your observation that the FT Minister's excuse to develop Bkt Gasing is hogwash.

Btw, did u see Howsy's caricature of u in his blog? I wonder if he was spot on as well? ;P

it's the same song all over again -- each MB and his cronies-warlords carving up the pie.

One day they will even take away the walkways in all residential areas to auction to the "alien" hawkers because the foreiogners must earn a decent living and also pay taxes -- indirectly-lah, to the enforcement officers.

I hope the PM's Dept is aleert enough to see all these breaches by the underlings! Malaysia is headed to wards a state of lawlessness and anarchy.

Any nation that needs progress, development is the ultimate decision.

Greens do have to give way to concrete jungle. It's the price we pay for progression. Population growth is the crux for the decision.

Yes, ultimately we do have a choice whether to make our homes among such concrete jungles and bear with the regular flashfloods, landslides and other samesuch "acts of God" or abandon them for the lush green forests in the boondocks.

Part of the trail at Taman Pendidikan Bukit Gasing has collapsed in a big way due to a landslide sometime last week. The trail has been cut off. A bungalow's compound is under threat. Although unrelated to the proposed development on the KL side, this is natural evidence of how fragile Bukit Gasing is. Please join us to SAVE BUKIT GASING.
